LA JOLLA, CALIF. - The Marist water polo team dropped a pair of games to ranked teams at the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC-San Diego. The Red Foxes fell to #6 UC-Irvine 16-4 in their first game, before losing a close game with #14 Long Beach State 9-6.
Against Irvine, four different players scored for Marist (0-6). Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.), Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.), Mackenzie Maynes (Newcastle, Wash.) and Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) all tallied goals. Elise Humphries (Anaheim, Calif.) played three quarters in goal and registered seven saves and a steal. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) played the final frame and made four saves.
In the second game, Puccino and Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Red Foxes' offense with two goals apiece. Yury Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) and Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) also each added a score. Thomas played the entire game in goal and made 10 saves.
Puccino's second goal tied the score at five with 2:35 left in the third quarter, but Marist could muster just one goal, Hamby's second of the game, in the final ten and a half minutes as Long Beach closed out the win.
The Red Foxes will close out their first west coast trip of the season with two games on the tournament's final day tomorrow. They will play Sonoma State at 9:20 a.m. P.T. and will play an opponent to be determined later in the day.
