Marist Water Polo Earns First Win Of Season

LA JOLLA, CALIF. - Three different Red Foxes scored two goals as the Marist water polo team got their first win of the season, defeating Sonoma State 9-7 Saturday morning at the Triton Invitational.

Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.), Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.) and Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) each scored twice for Marist (1-7) as the Red Foxes came back from a 2-0 deficit after the first quarter. Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.), Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) and Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) also registered goals. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) played the entire game in goal and made seven saves.

Levien scored her first goal just 22 seconds into the second quarter to cut the deficit in half and Jessica Hamby tied it just over a minute later. Her twin sister Alison gave the Red Foxes their first lead with 5:35 left in the quarter.

After the teams traded goals, Sonoma scored twice in the final two and a half minutes to take a 5-4 lead at halftime.

Puccino again tied the score right out of the break, and Marist scored three more times in the third quarter to give them their highest scoring output of the season. Desaulniers scored both of her goals in the period, and Kline added hers.

After Sonoma cut the Marist lead to one at 8-7 with 6:05 left in the final quarter, Levien scored her second of the game less than a minute later to provide the final margin.

Marist played tournament host #18 UC-San Diego in their second game of the day, falling to the Tritons for the second time in three days 8-4. Alison Hamby, Kline, Yury Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) and Mackenzie Maynes (Newcastle, Wash.). Thomas made 10 saves in goal.

The Red Foxes are back in action next weekend as they will travel to participate in the Bucknell Tournament. Marist will play Princeton and Hartwick on Saturday and Brown and Gannon on Sunday.
