POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist sophomore Yuriria Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) registered eight points, on four goals and four assists, to lead the Marist water polo team to a 16-6 win over Gannon on Saturday evening at the Marist Invite. Earlier in the day, the Red Foxes fell in a tough defensive battle, 5-4 to Brown.
Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) and Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.) each had hat tricks and Puccino also added an assist. Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) had a goal and two assists and Mackenzie Maynes (Newcastle, Wash.) and Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) both had multi-point games with a goal and an assist. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) made five saves in goal, also adding a steal and an assist.
The Red Foxes scored the first five goals of the game, taking a 5-2 lead after the first quarter.
Leading 7-3 at the half, Marist (4-13) broke the game wide open with eight goals in the third quarter to take a 15-4 lead after three periods.
Earlier in the day, the Red Foxes used three goals, by Puccino, Crabtree and Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.), in the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead at halftime over Brown. However, the Bears stiffened up on defense in the second half, keeping Marist scoreless the rest of the way. They scored two goals in the third quarter and one in the final two minutes of the game to complete the comeback win.
Puccino finished with a goal and two assists and Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) also scored for Marist. Thomas made 13 saves and added a steal.
The Red Foxes conclude play at the Marist Invite Sunday with a 1 p.m. game versus ninth-ranked Michigan. They will then head out west for spring break with games next week in California.
Notes - The team celebrated their three seniors - Desaulniers, Kline and Puccino - in a Senior Day pre-game ceremony.
