RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Marist water polo team shut out their opponents in four separate quarters on Saturday, cruising to two wins at the Lancer Invite, 14-3 over Claremont and 8-3 over La Verne.
Versus Claremont, four different players registered multi-goal efforts, led by three from Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.). Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.), Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.) and Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) all also scored twice. Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) and Elise Humphries (Anaheim, Calif.) split time in goal, making four and five saves, respectively.
After playing scoreless for nearly the first four minutes, the Red Foxes' (8-16) offense exploded for eight unanswered goals, taking a commanding 8-0 lead at halftime. Kline scored both of her goals in the first quarter to get Marist going. Six goals in the second quarter all but put the game away for the Red Foxes.
In the second game, the Red Foxes trailed 1-0 after the first quarter, but again answered with a another eight goal streak, taking an 8-1 lead midway into the fourth period. Twins Jessica Hamby and Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) got the comeback started with goals in the second quarter that gave Marist a 2-1 lead at the midway point. They scored
Jessica Hamby recorded a hat trick with three goals. Rinker, Desaulniers, Anna-Lena Hathaway (Pasadena, Calif.) and Mackenzie Maynes (Newcastle, Wash.) also scored for Marist. Thomas made 12 saves in goal.
The Red Foxes open MAAC play next weekend with home games on Saturday versus Wagner at 10 a.m. and Iona at 2:30 p.m.
