HONOLULU
- The Red Foxes completed
their final day of action in the Chevron Hawai'i Spring Fling Tournament with a
14-2 setback to #22 Texas A&M. Competing in their tenth game in
eight days in Honolulu, Marist fell in their revenge attempt versus the Aggies.
Senior Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.) led the Red Foxes with a third inning
two-run home run.
After holding Texas A&M's dangerous 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 hitters
in check to a tune of 4-18 with no RBIs in their first meeting on Wednesday,
the Red Foxes were unfortunately unable to duplicate their success on Saturday.
The script was flipped as the top five Aggie hitters went 11-15 with 11 RBIs
versus Marist pitching.
The Red Foxes were able to break through on the scoreboard with a
pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Junior Joelle Zahka (Lexington,
Mass.) led off the frame with a single through the left side of the infield.
Two batters later, Lamoureux came up to the plate and smashed a home run deep
over the left field wall. This was the senior's first home run of 2012 and tenth
of her Marist career. Lamoureux is now one round-tripper away from breaking
into the top 10 all-time in school history.
Marist threatened Texas A&M again in the fifth inning as they
loaded the bases with a combination of two walks and a Nicole DiVirgilio
(Aston, Pa.) single before Lauren Ainsley, the Aggies' starting pitcher, closed
out the frame and the game with a strike out.
With the 14-2 win, the Aggies improved to 20-8 on the season,
while Marist's record moved to 7-14.
Of note, sophomore Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) reached base
for her sixth consecutive of the tournament with a pair of walks. In six games
of action, including five versus nationally ranked opposition in the Hawai'i
Spring Fling Tournament, she led the team with a .364 batting average (4-11)
and an extraordinary .632 on-base percentage (12-19). She also had a team-high
two doubles.
The freshmen duo of Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and
Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes in the tournament with a
combined 3.44 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 22.1 innings pitched.
Marist will return to non-conference action on the mainland on
Wednesday, March 21 with a doubleheader at Yale. The first pitch of game one is
slated for 2:30 p.m.
