Southworth's Game-Winner With 13 Seconds To Go Leads Marist To 1-0 Victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Playing in their third game in eight days, the Red Foxes battled throughout to find the back of the net on the road at NJIT on Tuesday night, but with strong goalkeeping by junior Anthony Sokalski (London, Ontario), Marist was able to pull off a dramatic 1-0 victory with an Evan Southworth (Newburgh, N.Y.) goal with 13 seconds left in regulation.

In the first half, NJIT took to the offensive early, as the Highlanders registered five of the first six shots of the game. Sokalski kept NJIT at bay as he made two saves in the opening 16 minutes. After staving off the initial rush, the Red Foxes closed down the hosts over the final 29 minutes by not allowing a shot, while getting off seven of their own. Senior Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.) put two attempts on goal, while Simon Laugsand (Sortland, Norway) notched the other.

At the break, Marist held an 8-5 advantage in shots.

Coming out in the second half, the Red Foxes were able to carry over their offensive momentum as freshman Cesar Ceja (Port Chester, N.Y.) and sophomore Matty Berman (West Orange, N.J.) each tested NJIT's goalkeeper Jason Scolaro in the opening 15 minutes.

Over the final 30 minutes, the action moved quickly from end to end as the team's traded quality scoring chances. Sokalski was up to the task each time the Highlanders put a shot on target as the junior came up with saves.

Offensively, the Red Foxes had three excellent opportunities down the stretch: a Myles Ashong (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) lay off to Dylan Lee (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), who ripped a shot just high, a Laugsand to Ashong cross, which resulted in a strong Ashong header on goal and Southworth's game-winner at 89:47. Berman started the game-winning drive with a free kick from 35 yards out; with the cross in the air Brossard re-directed the ball toward net, where Southworth collected the deflection and headed it in to the goal.

For the game, Marist outshot NJIT 17-11 with a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. Individually, Ceja, Brossard and Wes Finch (Newburgh, N.Y.) all registered three shots.  Sokalski notched his second consecutive shutout win with six saves.

"That was a great road win. We didn't give up and got a goal in the waning seconds" remarked head coach Matt Viggiano after the game. "This was our third game in eight days and the team showed a lot of character, I'm real proud of that effort. We weren't at our best, but as a maturing group we found a way to win."

The Red Foxes will continue its five game road swing on Sunday, Sept. 9 when they travel to North Carolina State for a 5 p.m. non-conference matchup.
