FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Marist men's swimming and diving team posted a 173-124 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over Fairfield today in their short-course meter meet. The men's team continues its undefeated streak, as the Red Foxes boast a 3-0 record.
Junior Sean Sullivan (Huntington, N.Y.) led the men's team, winning the 100-meter breaststroke (1:09.13). Freshman Harris Nagle (Allentown, PA.) took first place in the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 9:04.14. In the 100-meter backstroke, senior Nick Spinella (Franklin Square, N.Y.) won the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:00.46. Junior John Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) took first in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 24.57, while junior William Drennen (Collegeville, Pa.) won the 100-meter freestyle (54.90). Freshman David Dimarco (Nazareth, PA.) placed first in the 200-meter backstroke in 2:16.78. Winning the 200-meter breaststroke, junior Dylan Cummings (Midland Park, N.J.) finished with a time of 2:34.02.
The men's team also claimed first place in the 200-meter medley relay. Spinella, junior Nick Vandermolen (Brielle, N.J.), freshman Alexander Cassel (East Greenville, PA.), and senior Alex Lombardi (Branford, Conn.) led the Red Foxes to victory with a time of 1:50.13.
In the diving events, senior Sean Molloy (Slingerlands, N.Y.) placed first in the one-meter dive (290.55) and the three-meter dive (291.15). Following suit, junior Jacob Baker (Shavertown, Pa.) took second in the one- and three-meter dives (270.22), while sophomore Josh Dodway (Niskayuna, N.Y.) placed third (259.87) in the one-meter.
In the 800-meter freestyle, Nagle took first place (9:04.14), while freshman Chris Penteck (Holbrook, NY.) and freshman Matthew Darcy (Holtsville, NY.) took fourth (9:18.08) and fifth place (9:27.37), respectively.
The Red Foxes took four placements in the 200-meter freestyle. Junior Spencer Kelley (Weston, Conn.) came in second place (2:03.28), while senior Nick Cook (Middlebury, Conn.) took third (2:04.27). Finishing three seconds behind, junior John Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) and senior Alexander Lombardi (Branford, Conn.) finished fifth (2:07.77) and sixth (2:07.83), respectively.
Freshman Ryan Murphy (New Fairfield, CT.) took second (2:13.03) in the 200-meter butterfly, while Cummings placed third (2:18.49).
With Spinella taking first, Marist claimed four of the five places in the 100-meter backstroke. Junior Jason Ruddy (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) and junior Brendan MCarthy (West Chester, Pa.) placed second (1:02.95) and third (1:05.40), respectively, while Dimarco took fifth place (1:07.70).
With Spitzer taking first in the 50-meter freestyle, the Red Foxes had three more swimmers follow suit. Sophomore Caleb Camp (Chapel Hill, N.C.) took first (25.16), while Drennen and Lombardi took third (25.42) and fourth (25.46), respectively.
The men's team performed the 400-meter individual medley and the 200-meter medley relay as an exhibition event for the second time in their last two events.
The swimming and diving team will travel to Rider for its next conference meet next Saturday. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m.
