Water Polo Gets Its First Two Wins Of The Season, Defeating Sonoma State and Santa Clara

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The Marist water polo team registered its first notches in the win column, defeating Sonoma State by a 7-2 score and hanging on to beat UC-Santa Clara 8-7 on Sunday on the second day of the Triton Invite.

After Sonoma State took a 2-0 lead after the first quarter in the first game, the Red Foxes (2-3) shut them out the rest of the way. Ellie Hoffman (Pasadena, Calif.) and Mackenzie Maynes (Newcastle, Wash.) both scored in the second quarter to knot the score at halftime.

Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) and Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) both scored in the final two minutes of the third quarter to give Marist the lead and Hamby added two more goals, along with one from Yuriria Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Against Santa Clara, Hoffman gave the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.

In the second period, after Brooke Else (Lansdale, Pa.) scored her first career goal to extend the lead to 3-0, Santa Clara stormed back with three straight goals to tie the score with 1:31 on the clock. However, just 15 seconds later, Rinker put the Red Foxes' back on top with a goal and Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) scored with 45 seconds remaining to give Marist a 5-3 lead going into halftime.

Hamby and Robyn Crabtree (Cutler Bay, Fla.) each scored in the third quarter to put the Red Foxes ahead 7-4 going into the final quarter.

Levien scored her second of the game at the 6:27 mark of the fourth quarter on a man-up situation to extend Marist's lead to 8-4. Santa Clara scored three times late in the quarter, but it was not enough.

Marist is back in action next weekend at the Bucknell Bison Invite. The Red Foxes will play Brown and Princeton on Saturday as well as George Washington and Bucknell on Sunday.
