NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Marist men's tennis team came up short against Yale on Sunday, falling to the Bulldogs of the Ivy League, 6-1. Junior
Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) was the lone singles winner for the Red Foxes, defeating Alex Hagermoser, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
"I am really proud of the way our guys competed against the team that has been ranked as high as 65 in the country," said head coach Tim Smith. "All someone has to do is to take a look at our box scores to see how close the matches were from 2 to 6 with junior Matteo Giudici coming away with a singles win."
Senior Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) fell to Yale's Tyler Lu, 6-3, 6-2. Red Fox senior Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) managed to extend his match to three sets, but fell 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 against Martin Svenning. Senior Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) also lost his match in three sets for Marist, as Daniel Faierman came out on top, 6-2, 6-7, 10-6.
Junior Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) fell to Yale's Photos Photiades, 7-5, 6-2. Sophomore Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) took each set to a tiebreak, but was edged out by Patrick Chase, 7-6, 7-6.
In the doubles matches, Rossi and Reznek lost to Svenning and Photiades, 8-2. The Red Foxes' duo of Klassen and sophomore Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) came up just short against James Ratchford, 8-6. The combination of Giudici and freshman Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) picked up Marist's lone doubles win in an 8-2 decision against Chase and Hagermoser.
The Red Foxes face Stony Brook for its final match-up of the Yale Invitational today, Sunday, Mar. 16. Following the weekend, Marist will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to St. Peter's to face the Peacocks in a MAAC contest at 3:30 p.m.
