BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Marist men's tennis team picked up a win on Saturday afternoon, defeating Patriot League foe Lehigh by a score of 5-2.
"It was an excellent win against the team who won the Patriot League and had all their player returning. What I particularly like about this team is that we have different players show up to create this win. I was particularly pleased with Fredrik Bjerke's come back after getting tested in the first set” head coach Tim Smith said.
The Red Foxes captured five of the seven singles matches between the two teams. Senior Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) notched a comeback win, knocking off Lehigh's Mark Goldberg, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Senior Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) fell to Ben Gilman, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) picked up the second win on the afternoon for the Red Foxes, defeating Mitchell Petersen in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6.
Jeremy Kochman gave Lehigh their second and final win in singles matches, defeating junior Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.), 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Sophomore Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) was impressive in another comeback win, beating the Mountain Hawks' Tyler Hansen, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Junior Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) defeated Lehigh's Ethan Bogard in straight sets with identical scores, 6-3, 6-3.
For the doubles matches, Rossi and Reznek edged Goldberg and Petersen in a tight match, 8-7. Klassen and Trym Nagelstad fell to Gilman and Kochman, 8-7. Giudici and Fletcher closed out the match with an 8-3 decision over Bogard and Hansen.
“Will Reznek and Lorenzo Rossi were double winners winning the doubles point and capturing their singles matches. Matteo Giudici and Dylan Fletcher were also double winners” head coach Tim Smith said.
The team will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Bryant in Bethlehem, Pa. at 9 a.m.
