MACON, Ga. – The Marist softball team clinched its second win of the season, posting a 6-1 victory over NC Central in a consolation game of the Mercer Bear Classic.
NC Central posted a run in the first inning, but that was as close as Marist would allow them to get. The Red Foxes jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first with runs score by sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.), sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) and freshman Rebecca Freeman.
Marist tallied on another run in the third from senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) scoring off a combination of a single from junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) as well as an overthrow and an error.
The Red Foxes posted another two runs in the sixth, with two runs scored off a home to left field by freshman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah).
For Marist, Barrera and freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.) led with two hits each, while Barrera also claimed two RBI's in the outing. Freeman posted eight putouts for the Red Foxes, while junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) compiled two assists. In five innings, senior pitcher Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) allowed no earned runs, and tallying five strikeouts to claim the win.
Marist is set to compete at the Wintrhop/Adidas Invitational next week, kicking off the tournament against Youngstown State at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 7.
