ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Marist softball team ended the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational with two losses. The Red Foxes Marist dropped a 5-3 decision against Winthrop in its second game of the day.
Game One
Marist fell in a close race to Wright State to start the last day of the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational.
Wright State posted three runs in the first innings to jump out to an early lead. The Red Foxes posted a run to the board from sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) in the third, before Wright State advanced to a three-run lead in the bottom of the inning.
Marist went on to tack on two unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings to bring the game within three. In the seventh inning, the Red Foxes senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) doubled to advance junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) and senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) to homeplate, but that was as close as Marist would get.
Klemmer led the Red Foxes with three hits and 3 RBI's in the outing, while Zahka claimed five assists.
Game Two
The Red Foxes jumped on the board early, claiming a run from sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) on a passed ball. Winthrop responded with a run in the second to tie the matchup at one, before Marist tacked on a homerun from sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) in the third.
Marist added another homerun from sophomore Colleen McWilliams (Monrovia, Calif.) to obtain a two-run lead. Winthrop came up big in the fifth inning, posting four runs to the scoreboard. The Red Foxes were unable to battle back, taking the 5-3 loss.
Defensively, senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) led the Red Foxes in the outing claiming eight putouts, while freshman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah) aided with three assists. Senior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) took the loss for Marist, compiling three strikeouts and five earned runs in seven innings.
The Red Foxes travel to Florida for a series of Spring Break games this week. Marist will play Bethune Cookman in a doubleheader on Friday at 12 p.m.
