Water Polo Loses in Competitive Contests against San Diego and Michigan

BOSTON, Mass. – The Marist water polo team dropped a 9-7 loss to San Diego State to open the Harvard Tournament, before falling to Michigan 13-8 in the second game of the day.

Junior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Red Foxes with three goals, and three field blocks while also drawing two ejections. Also tallying goals for Marist were senior Yuriria Chavez (Chicago, Ill.), freshman Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC), freshman Nastassia McGlothlin (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and sophomore Brooke Else (Lansdale, Pa.) with a goal each. Chavez also led Marist with three assists, while sophomore goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) compiled 12 saves and one steal.

The Red Foxes jumped out with three goals in the first quarter, with two from Jessica Hamby. The score was tied at three-all in the first, as both teams tallied another in the second to remain tied. Despite balanced scoring and strong team defense to keep the team in the game, Marist fell behind by two in the third quarter and were unable to catch up.

In the second game of the day, the Red Foxes claimed a first quarter lead (4-3), with goals from Jessica Hamby, junior Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.), junior Anna-Lena Hathaway (South Pasadena, Calif.), and freshman Jocelyn McQuade (Vancouver, BC).

Michigan responded with four unanswered goals in the second quarter, as Marist was only able to post one goal in the third to leave an eight-goal defecit. The Red Foxes would tack on three more goals, coming within five in the loss.

Leading the Red Foxes in the outing, Jessica Hamby, Levien, and Hathaway each posted two goals. Amorosa compiled five steals, while junior Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) maintained two field blocks. Also for Marist, Henry, posted seven saves and one steal.

Marist closes out the Harvard Tournament against Harvard at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.
