POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist softball team (17-21, 7-3 MAAC) hosted the Holy Cross Crusaders (10-20, 5-7 Patriot League) in a non-conference doubleheader today. The Red Foxes claimed game one with a 5-2 win before falling 5-4 in the nightcap.

Game One

The first game against the Crusaders was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) singled to center field for junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) to cross the plate. With Klemmer and senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) on first and second, freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) homered over the left field fence to give Marist a 4-0 lead.

The Crusaders answered back in the top of the fifth with a two-run shot over the right field fence to bring the matchup within two.

The Red Foxes tallied another run to the board in the fifth as Kuzma singled up the middle for freshman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah) to score. The Crusaders would get no closer as Marist sealed the 5-2 victory.

Kuzma led the Red Foxes with two hits in the outing, while Freeman tallied three RBIs for Marist. Defensively, Zahka posted 12 putouts, while junior Melanie White (Highland Ranch, Co.) added four assists. White also took the win for Marist, improving her regular season record to 3-6. In seven innings pitched, she retired five batters and only allowed two earned runs and four hits in the victory.

Game Two

In game two, Holy Cross took the lead first with a solo home run over the left field fence. The Red Foxes tied the matchup at one-all with a sacrifice fly to center field, as senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) crossed the plate for Marist.

The Crusaders added two runs in the top of the fourth to reclaim the lead (3-1). Holy Cross tacked on another in the fifth off of an error at first to give them a four-run lead.

Kuzma doubled to right center in the bottom of the fifth, scoring sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) to cut Marist's deficit to two.

Holy Cross tacked on another run in the top of the sixth to increase its lead to 5-2. The Red Foxes answered back in the bottom of the inning with a SAC fly to left field, as junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) crossed the plate to bring the game within two again (5-3). Freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.) pinch hit and notched a double to center field, scoring Zahka. Marist would end the inning leaving one stranded, down by just one (5-4).

Marist would get no closer, as the Crusaders took game two. Van Natta and Zahka led the Red Foxes with two hits each, while Van Natta clinched two RBIs in the outing. Van Natta led the team defensively as well, posting four assists, as Klemmer notched 12 putouts in the loss. Freshman Jayne Oberdorf (Greensburg, Pa.) took the loss for the Red Foxes. In four innings, she posted a strikeout, allowing three earned runs in six hits for Marist.

The Red Foxes will continue Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this weekend, as they host Quinnipiac for a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon at Gartland Field.
