POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist softball team (19-21, 9-3 MAAC) hosted the Quinnipiac Bobcats (10-32, 5-11 MAAC) for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader today. Marist swept the Bobcats, clinching game one with a 6-2 win and sealing game two's victory with a game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th (8-7).
Game One
Game one against Quinnipiac was one full of home runs, as both teams compiled five total throughout the outing.
The Bobcats kicked off the scoring early in game one, posting two runs off of two solo home runs.
Senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) put the Red Foxes on the board with her own solo shot to right field in the bottom of the second. In the next inning, junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) would also notch a homer in the game with solo shot to left center to tie the matchup at two-all.
The Red Foxes went on to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth to claim the go-ahead. Freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.) doubled down the left field line to score Kuzma, before sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) doubled to left field to draw in two more runs.
Sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) got in on the home run action, notching a solo shot to left field to give Marist a four-run lead over the Bobcats.
In the win, Kuzma and Zahka led Marist with two runs apiece. Korak and Cheek each posted two hits each in the victory, while Cheek led with two RBIs. Defensively, senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) claimed six putouts at first base. Senior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) claimed the win for Marist, pitching a complete game. She compiled three strikeouts, only allowing two earned runs and two hits in the outing.
Game Two
The Red Foxes kept their momentum going in game two, notching three runs in the first. Kuzma nailed a three-run homer to right center, scoring Van Natta and sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.). Marist went on to tack on another run in the second, as Van Natta grounded out to second as senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, Calif.) crossed the plate for Marist to give them a 4-0 lead.
The Bobcats brought the matchup within one in the top of the fourth with a three-run homer to center field. Marist answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning, as Van Natta singled to the short stop to score freshman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah).
Marist gave itself a 7-3 lead over Quinnipiac in the bottom of the fifth with runs scored by Klemmer and Zahka. The Bobcats tied the game up in the top of the seventh with four runs, forcing the matchup to go into three extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, with two outs, the Red Foxes loaded the bases. Korak stepped up to the plate to snag the game-winning RBI as she singled to left center for Duddy to cross the plate and seal the victory for Marist.
In the win, Duddy led the Red Foxes with two runs, while she, Van Natta, Kuzma, Korak, and Zahka each tallied two hits apiece. Kuzma also added three RBIs to help Marist clinch game two. Cheek led Marist on the defensive end with eight assists at third base. Junior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) took the win for Marist, going the final four innings. She compiled six strikeouts, allowing no earned runs in 17 batters faced.
The Red Foxes continue MAAC play as they head to Iona for a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m.
