NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Marist softball team (20-21, 10-4 MAAC) traveled to Iona (17-21, 11-6 MAAC) today for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader today. The Red Foxes split the day, falling to the Gaels 6-4 in game one before answering back in game two with a 12-4 victory in five innings.

Game One

The first game went scoreless until the Red Foxes posted three runs to the board. Sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) doubled to right center for sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) and freshman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah) to cross home plate.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Gaels brought the matchup within one off of a two-run homer. Marist answered with a run of their own, as Duddy claimed another run for the Red Foxes. Iona claimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh with four runs to clinch game one.

Duddy led Marist with two runs, while Van Natta posted two RBIs. The Red Foxes' six hits were spread out among Duddy, Van Natta, senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.), sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.), senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) and Barrera. Defensively, Van Natta added five assists, as Zahka and freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) each had six putouts apiece. Senior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) took the loss for Marist, compiling six strikeouts and only allowing two earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched.

Game Two

The Red Foxes answered back in game two with a 12-4 victory. The team kicked off the scoring in the first with two runs from Van Natta and Zahka. The Gaels responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game up.

Marist tacked on four more in the next inning to reclaim the lead. After doubling to left center, Cheek went on to score after senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) reached on an error. Zahka tallied a three-run homer to score Van Natta and Barrera.

The Red Foxes added four more in the top of the fourth from Barrera, Duddy, Van Natta and freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.) to give the team a 10-2 advantage. The Gaels would only be able to post two more runs in the game, but would get no closer.

To close out the game, Duddy scored on a wild pitch before Van Natta tacked on another run to seal the victory in five innings.

Zahka led Marist in the outing with five RBIs, while Van Natta added four runs in the win. Duddy, Van Natta, Zahka, Klemmer, and Cheek each notched two hits apiece. Defensively, Van Natta led Marist again with four putouts and four assists. Junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) claimed the win in the pitching circle for Marist, improving her season record to 7-5.

The Red Foxes head to Lafayette on Wednesday to close out their non-conference schedule. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
