POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men's tennis team improved to 11-4 this season with a 6-1 victory over Colgate on Sunday afternoon.
"A good win for the men's team against the Patriot League opponent that is coming with wins against Navy and Bucknell,” said head coach Tim Smith. “We accomplished what I wanted in the doubles and we are looking forward to a big match against Quinnipiac on Tuesday. We got wins at doubles and singles with Klassen, Giudici, and Reznek, which speaks well for how they have been playing this year."
Senior Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) lost a tough three-set tie breaker to Luke Gensburg, 6-0, 5-7, 10-2. Marist would sweep the rest of the singles matches, starting with senior Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) at second singles. Klassen defeated Bobby Berkowitz 6-4, 6-2. Senior Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) got the best of Alan Pleat, 6-4, 6-3. Junior Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) cruised by Archer McFall, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) topped Nick Laub in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Junior Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) downed Jake Hirschberg in the final singles match, 6-1, 6-3.
Marist swept doubles against the Raiders, winning all three matches. Rossi and Reznek defeated Gensburg and Berkowitz, 8-3. Klassen and sophomore Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) downed McFall and Pleat, 8-4. Giudici and freshman Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) cruised by Tom Haile and Laub, 8-1.
The Red Foxes return to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Tuesday, April 8 against Quinnipiac. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Hamden, Conn.
