LOUDINVILLE, N.Y. – The Marist softball team (21-22, 11-4 MAAC) claimed sole propriety of second place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) as the season winds down to its final week of play. The Red Foxes swept the Siena Saints (25-22, 10-5 MAAC) in a conference doubleheader today. Marist clinched game one 4-1, before taking game two 6-5.
Game One
The Saints struck first in game one with a run on the bottom of the first, but that was as much as the Red Foxes would allow in the outing.
Marist took the lead in the top of the third, with sophomores Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.) and Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) claiming runs as junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) doubled to center field. Kuzma went on to score for Marist, as she stole home after freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.) was caught stealing at second.
Marist tacked on another run in the top of the fifth. The Red Foxes loaded the bases after senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) was hit by a pitch. Freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) flied out to right field to score Kuzma, giving Marist the 4-1 victory.
Kuzma led Marist with two hits and two runs in the outing. Defensively, senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) notched nine putouts, while sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) added three assists. Junior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) claimed the win for Marist, improving her season record to 5-6. In seven innings, she notched eight strikeouts, and only allowed one earned run and two hits in 28 batters faced.
Game Two
The Saints struck first again in game two, posting two runs in the bottom of the second. The Red Foxes answered right back in the next inning with two runs of their own. With the bases loaded, Zahka doubled to left center for Duddy and senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) to cross the plate to tie it up.
Marist took the lead in the top of the fifth off of a two-run homer from Zahka. The Saints could only tack on one run in the bottom of the inning, as the Red Foxes claimed a 4-3 lead.
The Red Foxes increased their lead over the Saints with two more runs in the top of the sixth. Van Natta laid down a sacrifice bunt to score freshman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah). Marist tacked on another run as Kuzma singled to center field for Duddy to cross home plate. With a 6-3 lead over the Saints entering the bottom of the seventh, Marist only allowed Siena to come within one before senior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) struck out the last batter for the win.
Duddy led Marist with two runs and two hits, while Zahka, Korak and Freeman also added two hits apiece. In the victory, Zahka posted four of the Red Foxes' six RBIs. Freeman claimed six outs, as Van Natta and Lewis posted two assists each. In the pitching circle, Lewis (10-6) claimed the win. In seven innings, she recorded six strikeouts in 35 batters faced.
Marist will close out its regular season schedule this weekend, as the team hosts two MAAC doubleheaders. The Red Foxes will face off against Canisius at 12 p.m. on Saturday. Marist will then host Saint Peter's on Sunday, as the team kicks off the day to celebrate the Class of 2014 for Senior Day at 11:40 a.m. First pitch will follow at noon.
