STORRS, Conn. – The Marist men's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory at the University of Connecticut in its first dual match of the 2014-15 season on Tuesday.
Marist won four of the six singles matches, with three of the victories going to a third set. Freshman Rudolf Kurz (Oberpullendorf, Austria), senior Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.), freshman Justin Chanthalangsy (San Marcos, Calif.) and freshman Timo Tanzer (Auvernier, Switerland) each earned singles' victories, with Tanzer's triumph clinching the match for the Red Foxes. Although UConn took the doubles point, the third doubles team of senior Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) and sophomore Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) earned an 8-5 victory.
“Very exciting match with three of our freshmen really showing up,” Head Coach Tim Smith said. “Chanthalangsy who won 6-2, 6-1; Kurz who won in a third set tiebreaker; and then at 3-3 with the final match on the line, Tanzer dominated the third set tiebreaker to win the match for our team. Although our third doubles team of Giudici and Fletcher came back and won their match, our doubles are really still a work-in progress.”
Marist will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at home against Fordham at 4 p.m.
