Marist Women Take Down Fairfield In Milestone Win

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Head Coach Larry VanWagner earned his 350th career win as the Marist women's swimming and diving team topped Fairfield, 180-102, on Nov. 6 in McCann Natatorium. Marist is now 2-1 on the season and won its 32nd consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference dual meet to extend its streak dating back to 2009.

As the men's and women's head coach at Marist, VanWagner has racked up 252 men's wins with the remaining 98 coming from the women's program. He has spent 26 of his 40 seasons working alongside Diving Head Coach Melanie Bolstad

The Red Foxes' three relay squads finished at the top of the leaderboard in the 200-yard medley relay to begin the meet with times of 1:52.32, 1:53.27, and 1:53.74, respectively. Sophomore Georgia Goldman led off for the second place 'B' relay team and individually won both backstroke events after clocking in at 59.92 seconds in the 100-yard event and swimming the 200 in 2:10.60.

Sophomore Daniela Gomez edged junior Sarah Mosca in the 100-yard breaststroke by .09 seconds with a time of 1:10.75 as the Red Foxes opened up a 106-22 lead through the first seven events. In the 1,000-yard freestyle sophomore Melanie Newton led all competitors with a time of 10:56.87 while senior captain Bethany Powhida took the 100-yard event in 54 seconds flat.

Marist divers went 1-2-3 on the 3-meter board, led by senior Renata Diotalevi's score of 274.20 points. Sophomore Megan Berardelli made her season debut and finished second (257.02 points) and freshman Lauren Katz rounded out the group (221.77 points). Diotalevi and Berardelli also finished in the top two spots at one meter with 253.42 points and 246.82 points, respectively.

The Red Foxes will continue their conference schedule with a dual meet at Rider at 1 p.m. Nov. 14. The Broncs have been runners up at the MAAC Championships for six of the last eight years.
