LEWISBURG, PA. – The No. 20 Marist water polo team (4-6) split its last two games of the Bucknell Tournament, dropping game one 9-8 against No. 10 Long Beach State (5-7). In game two, the Red Foxes scored a season high 17 goals to defeat Notre Dame College (0-5) by a final score of 17-5.
In game one, the Red Foxes had three multi-goal scorers. Seniors Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.), Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.), and captain Anna-Lena Hathaway (South Pasadena, Calif.) each contributed two goals in the loss to Long Beach State. Sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC), and senior captain Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) each added a goal in the game as well.
Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) made 13 saves while giving up 9 goals against, had two steals and one ejection. The Red Foxes had seven six-on-five opportunities, but only managed to capitalize on three chances.
Marist had a lead of 2-1 at the end of the first quarter on goals from Jessica and Alison Hamby. The Red Foxes added to their lead in the second quarter when Jessica and Alison Hamby added their second goals of the game, and Hathaway her first. Marist took a 5-2 lead into halftime.
Levien, Amorosa, and Hathaway each grabbed a goal in the third quarter to maintain the Marist lead at a score of 8-6 heading into the final quarter of play. Marist was unable to score a goal in the fourth quarter, while Long Beach State added three more to defeat the Red Foxes by a final score of 9-8.
In game two, the Red Foxes had 10 different individuals contribute goals in the 17-4 win over Notre Dame. Sophomore Amanda Amorosa scored a team high four goals, had five assists and one steal. Freshman Diana Carballo (Mexico City, Mexico) registered acareer-high of three goals in the win to go along with four steals. Jessica Hamby added three more goals for Marist. Seniors Alison Hamby, Anna-Lena Hathaway and Jamison Mahar (Riverside, Calif.), sophomores Nastassia McGlothlin (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Jocelyn McQuade (Vancouver, BC), and freshman Celeste Brown (Carmichael, Calif.) and Alexa Ovalle (Chicago, Ill.) each contributed one goal in the win.
Freshman goalie Jessica Hermosillo (La Mirada, Calif.) got her first career start in the final game of the Bucknell Tournament. Hermosillo posted three saves on four goals against, had two assists and one steal. Skyler Henry made three saves in the fourth quarter on zero goals against.
Goals by J. Hamby, Amorosa, A. Hamby, McQuade and Carballo gave Marist a 5-1 lead after the first quarter of play. The Red Foxes kept up its offensive scoring in the second quarter netting six more goals to take an 11-1 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, J. Hamby, Ovalle and Carballo scored the only goals for Marist, while Notre Dame had its most productive quarter scoring three goals, giving the Red Foxes a 14-4 lead with one quarter to play. Hathaway, Amorosa, and J. Hamby scored the final three goals for the Red Foxes to give the final score of 17-5.
Marist returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 22 when it welcomes No. 19 Hartwick (5-8) to McCann Natatorium. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
