Softball Splits On Day Two of College of Charleston Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Marist softball team split two games on its second day of competition at the College of Charleston. The Red Foxes lost to Wisconsin of the Big Ten by a score of 6-3 in the morning, but rebounded to defeat Furman 5-2 in the evening.

Game One – Wisconsin 6, Marist 3

Freshman third baseman Brittany Colombo (Philadelphia, Pa.) went 2-for-4 and drove in all three of the Red Foxes' runs, while freshman left fielder Kourtney Paul (Twinsburg, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Red Foxes scored the game's first run in the top of the third, when Colombo's two-out single drove in Paul. The Badgers then tied the game in their half of the third, and scored twice in the fourth.

Marist tied the game in the fifth on a two-run single by Colombo, which brought home Paul and junior shortstop Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.). However, Wisconsin answered with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Senior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) went the distance for the Red Foxes with three strikeouts, and now stands at 2-4.

For Wisconsin, center fielder Maria Van Abel went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Maria Watts (5-2) went the first 4.2 innings to earn the win, and Annie Davis held the Red Foxes scoreless over the final 2.1 for her first save.

Game Two – Marist 5, Furman 2

The Red Foxes received two hits apiece from Paul, Van Natta and sophomore right fielder Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.). Sophomore Jayne Oberdorf (Greensburg, Pa.) pitched a complete game, and scattered seven hits and two walks while striking out four. Oberdorf recorded 13 ground ball outs, and allowed just one earned run.

Marist broke the game open early with four runs in the top of the first, all of which came with two outs. Freshman catcher Samantha Reilly (Toms River, N.J.) drove in Colombo with a double. Then, a single by senior second baseman Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) brought in both Reilly and Korak, while Lalli was able to come home herself after a Furman error.

The Paladins scored once in the second, but the Red Foxes re-claimed their four-run lead in the fifth on a two-out infield single by Van Natta, which scored pinch-run Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah). Furman scored the game's final run in the sixth.

Center fielder Ambree Muller and first baseman Brittany Houston each had two hits for Furman. Alex Sappington (2-4) took the loss in the circle.

Marist (5-8) closes out play at the College of Charleston Invitational on Sunday. The Red Foxes will face the host Cougars at 1:30 p.m.
