BEAUMONT, Texas - The Marist volleyball team completed the Lamar Invitational falling to the host Cardinals, 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-22), on Saturday. The Red Foxes are now 1-2 for the season.
Senior Kelsey Lahey slammed 11 kills and had seven digs. Also in the finale, junior Lexi Millington led Marist with 12 digs and chipped in a service ace. Junior Liz Gassman and sophomore Ashton Korona accounted for half of the team's blocks.
Sophomore Kelsey Ediger and junior Amanda Schlegel were named to the Lamar Invitational All-Tournament Team following the match.
Both sides stayed within three points of each other in the first set with Lamar earning 10 of the last 16 points for the early lead. The Cardinals ended the following set on a 5-0 run before Marist charged back in the final set. The Red Foxes tied the score six times, including at 22, but could not pull through in the end.
Marist had as many kills as digs in the contest, beating out Lamar in both categories with 42. The Cardinals hit .312 in the match and pounded 25 blocks, however.
Junior Lauren Stahlman posted match highs with 17 digs and two service aces for Lamar while junior Chelsea Grant jumped for seven blocks.
The Red Foxes will begin play in the Crosstown Tournament when they face off against Morehead State at 2 p.m. Sept. 4. Marist will play at Lehigh that same evening at 7 p.m. and close out the weekend back at Lafayette for a 1 p.m. match Sept. 5.
