POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Freshman Kristen Reilly's goal just six minutes into the match proved to be the deciding factor as the Marist women's soccer team defeated the Rider Broncs, 1-0 Saturday night at Tenney Stadium. As a result of the win the Red Foxes are now 1-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
Reilly picked up her second goal after a pass from Devon Cummings split the defense and left her open on the wing, Reilly lobbed a shot over the keeper from about 20 yards out to give the Red Foxes a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The Red Foxes controlled most of the action throughout, pressing hard up the field and playing most of the game in their opponents end.
“Except for certain moments in mental lapse I would say the team was pretty flawless and it started from warm-ups,” said head coach Katherine Lyn. “We emphasized a lot of finishing and making sure that when we have the opportunity to put it away, we do.”
Marist led in shots, 13-10 and also corners, 7-3. Reilly led the Red Foxes in shots with five, three of which were on goal. Camille Bowen and Ashlee Burke each had two shots, Hope Quinonez, Danielle Glazer, Brianna Robinson, and Juliette Loccisano each tallied one.
In goal for the Red Foxes, Makala Foley picked up the shutout with five saves, a few of which came in the waning moment keeping Marist on top. On the opposite end Bethany-May Howard record six saves for the Bronc's and Meghan McCabe led the team in shots with three.
“Everyone was on the same page, we really stuck to the game plan and everyone really communicated throughout the bench, from the goalkeeper all the way up to the forwards,” said Lyn. 'Some shaky times here and there and that's always going to happen with nerves but credit to our freshmen that really stepped up and owned it.”
The Red Foxes head out west to Buffalo to take on Canisius this upcoming Wednesday, September 30th. The game kicks-off at 4 P.M.
