JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – The Marist men's tennis team kicked off Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference league play with a 7-0 win against the Saint Peter's Peacocks Tuesday afternoon. With the win the Red Foxes improve to 8-3 overall.
“Excellent way to start our first MAAC match,” said head coach Tim Smith. “All the guys played well and I was especially pleased with our win at first doubles and first singles because they were both matches that could've gone the other way had we not played well.”
The Red Foxes swept all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. Joe Motta and Fredrik Bjerke won from the first doubles position, defeating the Peacock's Danil Ivanov and Jorge Korenigung, 6-4.
Rudolf Kurz and Dylan Fletcher teamed up to win their match, 6-2, and the freshman duo of Carlos Moreno and Max Darrington won their first career conference doubles match, 6-1, over Saint Peter's Jon Parades and Doug Nover.
Marist kept the hot play going, winning all six singles matches, five of which in straight sets. Kurz, Bjerke, Fletcher, Siracusa, and Darrington all won their second matches of the day and Timo Tanzer won his first defeating Parades at the third singles position in a three setter, 6-7, 7-5, 11-9.
The Red Foxes continue on with conference play as they travel to Lawrenceville, New Jersey to take on Rider on Friday, April 1st. After their match against Rider the Red Foxes will wrap up non-conference play with a match against Army West Point on Thursday, April 7th.
