Men's Tennis Defeats Quinnipiac, Moves Into First Place

HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Marist men's tennis team moves into sole possession of first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as they defeated the Quinnipiac Bobcats on the road, 4-3, at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts. The win extends the team's winning streak to seven matches as the Red Foxes move to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in league play.

“I was extremely pleased with the fact that different guys stepped up to help us win this match. In many of our matches our one, three, and six have won most of the time, and this time it was our two and five in particular that made key contributions to us winning,” said head coach Tim Smith. “As we huddled at the end of the match we really discussed the importance of the doubles point because that really proved to be the difference today.”

Filling in for Paulo Siracusa at his normal doubles spot, Jan Dernic teamed up with Justin Chanthalangsy at first doubles. Although the two played well they fell to Quinnipiac's first doubles team Jonas Kuwert and Freddie Zaretsky, 6-4.

After falling behind in the doubles point 1-0, Rudolf Kurz and Dylan Fletcher came up with an important win for the Red Foxes at second doubles as they defeated Luke Roser and Kei Ezaka, 6-4.

Joe Motta and Fredrik Bjerke then secured the doubles point for Marist when they defeated Julian Rozenstein and Ryoma Haraguchi, 7-5.

Chanthalangsy won the first singles match for Marist when his opponent, Zaretsky, was forced to retire with an injury. Quinnipiac's Rozenstien then pulled Quinnipiac back to within one after a hard fought match with Bjerke that ended, 6-3, 6-3, in Rozenstien's favor.

Fletcher, who has been as solid as they come for the Red Foxes these last few weeks, defeated Haraguchi, 6-3, 6-1 before Jan Dernic clinched the match for the Red Foxes, defeating Roser, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

Kurz and Timo Tanzer dropped their matches, Kurz in three sets and Tanzer in a super tiebreaker, as Quinnipiac pulled the overall match score back to 4-3.

With just two matches remaining in the season the Red Foxes return home to host Monmouth on Wednesday, April 20th at 3 p.m.
