SAN DIEGO - The Marist volleyball team began its 2016 regular season on the West Coast, falling to host San Diego State 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-14) at the Aztec Invitational on Aug. 26.

The freshman trio of Megan Fergus, Nikki DeSerpa and Stephanie Stone jump started their collegiate careers, combining for nine of Marist's 19 kills in the match. DeSerpa added a service ace while Stone tied for the team lead with two total blocks. Playing in her home state, senior Lexi Millington dove for a match-high 14 digs.

Consecutive kills from Fergus gave the Red Foxes their first lead of the match at 3-2 and Marist got as close as four points when it forced an attack error to move the score to 13-9.

Marist began the middle set ahead 3-0 with sophomore Katie Brierley behind the service line. Junior Kelsey Ediger broke the first of three ties in the frame after slamming a kill and finished the match with six. San Diego State brought the match to 2-0 however and did not trail in the final set.

Aztec senior Hailey Jones put up seven digs and 19 assists from the setter position. Seven different San Diego State players registered a block and the Aztecs had a 10-3 advantage for the match in that category. Marist forced nine service errors from their first opponent of the year and committed just five.

The Red Foxes have a double dip scheduled for Aug. 27, as they will play Denver at 4 p.m. and come right back to compete against Michigan State at 7:30 p.m. in the Aztec Invitational.
