FORT MYERS, Florida - The Marist volleyball team ended its regular season tournament stretch with a 3-0 loss at Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 10. The Eagles took the sets 25-11, 25-20 and 25-16 respectively.
Marist junior Kelsey Ediger slammed a team-high nine kills while senior Lexi Millington had as many digs. Both sides had five service aces with the Red Foxes getting one from five different players.
The Eagles had the hot hands to begin the morning match, bursting out to a 10-3 lead and never looking back.Â
Marist turned the tide in the following set, earning the first three points with the help of two kills from freshman Nikki DeSerpa. Florida Gulf Coast countered with four consecutive scores as possesion flipped back and forth. A 4-1 Red Foxes' run put them with one point at 10-9 and they would get within one two more times, but executin in front got the Eagles a 2-0 edge in the match.
In the final frame, Marist had a stretch in which it picked up five of seven points to trim the FGCU lead to 11-8. A service ace from sophomore Mackenzie O'Brien and a pair of kills from Ediger highlighted the run. A 4-1 scoring spree from FGCU was the beginning of the end for Marist however.
Florida Gulf Coast had 43 kills and hit .447 as a team. Sophomore Amanda Carroll led the attack with 15 kills while classmate Maggie Rick dished out 38 assists.
The Red Foxes (0-9) will host Army West Point in their home opener at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 in McCann Arena. Marist will be looking for its third straight win against the Black Knights in the battle for the Hudson River.Â
