POUGHKEEPSIE, New York — The Marist men's soccer team (1-0-0) heads out on a season long six game road trip, beginning with a match at the Hartwick Hawks on Tuesday at 7 PM.Â
PREVIOUS OUTING:
The Red Foxes opened the 2017 season with a thrilling 3-2 comeback win against the Albany Great Danes on Friday night in Tenney Stadium. The Great Danes, who were ranked #19 in the country in the College Soccer News Preseason National Poll, opened the scoring with goals at the 15 and 50 minute marks. The Red Foxes then scored three in a row from sophomore David Nkansah-Siriboe, freshman Allen Gavilanes (his first career goal) and Nkansah-Siriboe again. Marist opened the scoring when a corner kick by Gavilanes was passed to junior Juan Parada on the right corner of the box who crossed the ball to the back post and onto the head of Nkansah-Siriboe who put it home. Gavilanes then tied it up 10 minutes later when a ball from sophomore Ernest Mitchell found the feet of junior Bruce Jeter inside the box. Jeter laid it back for Gavilanes who ripped a shot from the top of the area into the bottom left corner. Nkansah-Siriboe then scored the game winner with an absolute rocket of a shot from the right side of the box off a pass from Gavilanes in the 82nd minute.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS:
Hartwick is coming off a 4-1 loss to the University of Vermont Catamounts on Friday evening. After going down 1-0 just over 19 minutes into the game, Marc Berry tied it up for Hartwick just under two minutes later with a header off a cross into the box that bounced off the cross bar and in. While the two teams entered the half tied 1-1, two quick goals by Vermont just 1:28 into the second half put the game out of reach, with the Catamounts scoring a third in the 57th minute to seal the three goal victory.Â
The Hawks finished 2016 at 9-6-4 and made it all the way to the Sun Belt semifinals before losing. Hartwick visited Tenney Stadium in the 2016 home opener for the Red Foxes with the home side emerging victorious 3-1.Â
DOUBLING UP:
In one game this season, David Nkansah-Siriboe has doubled his goal tally from 2016 (1 goal in 16 games), has one less shot on goal (2) than he did all of last season (3) and has more than half as many shots total (4) as in 2016 (7).Â
WONDER KID:Â
Freshman Allen Gavilanes had a huge start to his collegiate career, factoring in all three of Marist's goals against Albany. He recorded his first career assist on Nkansah-Siriboe's opening goal, 11 minutes later scored his first career goal off a shot from the top left corner of the box and then six minutes later picked up his second assist of the game on a pass to Nkansah-Siriboe that gave the Red Foxes the game winning goal.Â
MAAC AWARDS:
Nkansah-Siriboe was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer Offensive Player of the Week for his two goal performance against the Great Danes.
