POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The 2011 Marist women's soccer team captured the program's first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship after a dominant regular season and thrilling postseason run.
On the heels of a tough out-of-conference slate, the Red Foxes marched into MAAC play prepared and rattled off a 7-1-1 record. With a 3-2 overtime victory against Siena in their final regular season contest, the 2011 Red Foxes became the winningest squad in program history, as well as the outright MAAC regular season champion.
In the semifinals, the Red Foxes squared off against fourth-seeded Fairfield for the right to advance to the MAACÂ finals. After 110 minutes of 1-1 action, the Red Foxes converted three of their four penalty kicks to advance by a count of 3-2. Junior Caitlin Landsman (Burke, Va.) came up with two stops of Stag penalty kicks to lead Marist to the trophy game.
The Marist Women's Soccer team earned its first-ever MAAC Championship and its first NCAA bid with an exciting 1-0 victory over Loyola. In a hard-fought, physical battle, a goal by freshman forward Amanda Epstein in the 43rd minute stood up over the final 47 plus minutes as the game-winner. Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Landsman backstopped a stout Red Fox defense to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
The Red Foxes ended their record-breaking season with a program best 13 wins on a 13-6-2 overall mark. Other records that fell in 2011 included freshman Amanda Epstein's tie of the all-time single season points record of 28 and sophomore Rycke Guiney set the all-time single season assists record with nine helpers. Epstein also was the program's first-ever MAAC Rookie of the Year.
The Marist women's soccer team ended the most successful season in program history with a defeat over Boston College in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Facing off with the #21 Eagles, the Red Foxes fell by a score of 6-1. Senior Kathryn Hannis netted her second goal of the season when she got Marist on the board in the 49th minute.
