Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2019 season on Friday night, defeating the Gonzaga Bulldogs 2-1.
With the win, Marist improves to 1-1 on the season, while the Zags drop to 0-3 on the year.
- In the 12th minute, Joe Corner had a breakaway for Gonzaga, but sophomore Samuel Ilin made an incredible jumping save to preserve the scoreless tie.
- In the 21st minute, The Bulldogs broke that tie as Mark McEntosh connected with the top-left corner pocket, giving the Zags a 1-0 lead.
- After sophomore Christian Curti took a shot in the 26th minute that glanced slightly off the bottom of the crossbar, he tied the match after collecting his own rebound and placing a header just out of the reach of Gonzaga's goalkeeper.
- In the 59th minute, Marist broke the tie after a beautiful goal from Senior Marcus Ginman, giving the Red Foxes a 2-1 lead.
- Marist's defense dominated the rest of the way, only allowing one total shot after Ginman's goal, helping to preserve the 2-1 victory.
- Junior Allen Gavilanes led the team in shots for the second straight match, collecting a match-high seven.
- Demetrius Kigeya and Frankie Ljucovic each had three shots for Gonzaga, leading the team, however, they combined for just one shot on goal.
- The Red Foxes out shot the Zags, 18-12.
- Despite the loss, Gonzaga was slightly more disciplined than Marist, only committing eight fouls to the Red Foxes' 12.
- The Bulldogs had a slight advantage in time of possession, controlling the ball 51% of the time.
- Curti's goal was his first of the year, and it came on his second shot of the campaign. This ties his career-high for goals in a season, as he had just one goal in all of his 2018 freshman season.
- Ginman's goal was his first of the season, and third of his career. After not scoring a single goal his freshman and sophomore seasons, he had two his junior year, and is now one away from matching his career high for a season.
- Ilin grabbed hist first career goalie victory, and made a career high three saves in the process.
The Red Foxes hit the road again, this time traveling to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for a matchup against the University of Pennsylvania on Monday, September 9. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
