POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The bonds that tie generations of the Marist University football program together were once again evident on the final day of preseason camp.
New relationships were established, and friendships were renewed on Wednesday, Aug. 20 as the program took part in Red Fox Reach Out, which was headed by
Alyssa Gates, Associate Athletics Director/Student-Athlete Enhancement. Over 20 former members of the Marist football team with graduation years spanning three decades returned to campus for what is becoming an annual staple of the program.
"Having our alumni back on campus is so meaningful," Gates said. "I'm so grateful to them for making the time to be here, which for many of them meant taking the day off from work and being away from their families, some driving a significant distance to spend time with our current student-athletes. I loved seeing their reactions to all of the changes to our campus and sharing memories and stories from the past with one another. Our current student-athletes learned so much and now have 22 new connections who will support them on and off the field. This is a special group and it was such a joy to spend the day with all of them."
The day began at Tenney Stadium, as the alumni watched the 2025 edition of the Red Foxes close out preseason camp with a scrimmage. Their day continued in the dining hall as they enjoyed lunch with the team. For two hours in the afternoon, the alumni gathered at the Cornell Boathouse with members of this year's team for a networking session.
Chuckie Looney holds all of Marist's all-time passing records. The starting quarterback on Marist's 2013 Pioneer Football League championship and a Florida native, Looney now lives on Long Island and works in commercial real estate. It was the first time he participated in the event, and he promised that it would not be the last.
"I'll apologize to Ms. Gates for waiting 12 years to do this," Looney said. "Awesome event, I've been wanting to do it for many years, but the timing has never worked out. I owe a lot of what I've become today to the program. It's such an honor and a pleasure to get back to it. I have a ton of gratitude for the opportunity to come back and bestow some knowledge."
Mike Arrington is a two-time Marist graduate and a three-year captain who concluded his outstanding playing career as a linebacker in 2023. A leader on and off the field in his time at Marist, Arrington is now a business development representative for Movable Ink, a software development company based out of New York City.
"Always grateful for football and for Marist specifically, because it really changed my life," Arrington said. "To be a kid from Virginia and get up to the Northeast, and I'm still working in the Northeast, I really credit that to Marist football and being able to shape my life. I'm really appreciative of
Alyssa Gates for inviting me to come up here and share my story and be able to give back in any way possible."
