KISSIMMEE, FLA. - The Marist softball team used a seven-run second inning highlighted by a three-run home run by freshman Danielle Koltz (Chenango Valley, N.Y.) and a two RBI double by classmate Joelle Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) to defeat Colgate 9-6 in its final matchup during the 2010 Rebel Spring Games. The team now stands at 3-13 on the season as it has won its last two games.

Koltz totaled three RBIs in the game to go along with two runs scored, while seven of the nine starters notched a run scored in the contest. Senior Alanna Woody (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) also notched two runs in the game in the first two innings of the game.

After the first inning the score was knotted at one. Freshman Christina Lausch (Lancaster, Pa.) started the frame with a one out single. It started a stretch of eight consecutive Red Foxes to reach base. After a Lindsay Durant (Martinsville, N.J.) put runners on second and third, Zahka drove in the pair with a double. Sophomore Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) continued the inning with a base hit of her own that scored Zahka from second base.

Koltz drove in Woody and Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) who reached on an error and walk respectively, when Koltz hit her first home run of the season. After 12 batters went to the plate in the top half of the second, Marist led Colgate 8-1.

The middle of the Colgate lineup totaled three runs between the fourth and fifth innings to get the Raiders to within four at 8-4. Colgate added one run in the bottom of the seventh as Melissa Babb-Renta drove in Natalie Sidehof on a base hit.

Zahka paced the Red Foxes offense as she went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Lausch and Corriss both added two hits in the game.

In the circle, sophomore Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) picked up the win to move to 1-4 on the season. She threw for four innings gave up three runs, all of which were earned and struck out three.

Schell was relieved by Koltz, who notched her first collegiate save in three innings of relief. Koltz preserved the win for Marist as she struck out three batters as well.
