MOUNT PLESANT, S.C. - The Marist softball team dropped its first two games of the season at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic on Friday. The Red Foxes fell to Iowa State 10-1 in five innings in the first game of the day, and suffered an 11-3 setback to the Drexel Dragons in the nightcap.
Against Drexel, the Red Foxes plated three runs in the top of the first on a two-RBI double by junior Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.). DiVirgilio plated junior Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.). Freshman Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch after she got hit by a pitch to get on base.
The Dragons responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. Freshman Hayley Shelton (Pilot Mountain, N.C.) retired the first batter of her collegiate career on a ground out. Four straight batters reached base capped by a two-run single by Hillary Allen. The Red Foxes held a 3-2 advantage following one inning of play.
Drexel added five runs in the second inning to put the game out of reach.
In the first game, Marist starting pitcher Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) set down the Cyclones in order in the top of the first. In the second she put runners on first and second with two outs before a fielders' choice ended the threat.
Iowa State (7-4) scored seven straight runs in the third and fourth innings. The Red Foxes responded in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single from Corriss. She drove in sophomore Christina Lausch (Lancaster, Pa.). Corriss stood in with the bases loaded and drove a single back through the middle to score Marist's run.
The Cyclones added three additional runs in the fifth to arrive at the final score.
Marist will continue play at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic on Saturday, Feb. 26 against Liberty and the host Cougars. The Red Foxes will square off with Liberty at noon and take on the College of Charleston at 4 p.m.
