NORFOLK, VA. - The Marist softball team concluded play at the Spartan Classic with a 3-1 record in the tournament on Sunday. The Red Foxes took a 10-1 win in five innings from the hosts from Norfolk State and dropped a 2-0 decision to St. Francis (Pa.) in the second game of the day. Against the Spartans, Marist got two hits from junior Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.) and freshman Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.).
Klemmer added three RBIs to her 2-for-2 day at the plate, while freshman Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) added a pair of RBIs in the top of the first inning.
With two runners on base and two outs in the top of the first, Birnbaum scorched a double to left field which scored both Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) and Lamoureux. The Spartans pushed across a run of their own in the bottom of the first to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Red Foxes after an inning of play.
The Red Foxes held a 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth when the offense doubled its scoring output for the game. Sophomore Sarah Carmody (Camarillo, Calif.) used a single to right field with the bases loaded to score Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.). Two batters later, Klemmer got a two-out base hit up the middle that scored both Danielle Koltz (Chenango Bridge, N.Y.) and Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.).
Klemmer and Carmody would both come around to score before the inning ended. Following the top of the fifth, Marist took a 10-1 lead back into the field.
In the fifth, Norfolk State needed at least two runs to keep the game going, but freshman Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) set the lineup down in order to end the game. Lewis retired the last seven batters she faced in the game. She recorded her second win of the season and gave up just two hits, while striking out five batters.
Against the Red Flash, Saint Francis struck first in the top of the second and fourth for one run on each occasion. The Red Foxes had three runners in scoring position in the game including one in the bottom of the seventh. Koltz was on third base before three ground outs ended the game.
Marist (6-8) will continue its stretch of nine games in five days on Monday, March 14 at Morgan State. First pitch of the twinbill is slated for 1:30 p.m.
