Marist Softball Falls In MAAC Doubleheader At Manhattan

April 17, 2011

Final Stats

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Red Foxes dropped a pair of games on Sunday as they lost to the Jaspers in both games of the doubleheader by scores of 9-6. Freshman Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) and junior Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) led the Marist offense, as Klemmer went 3-7 in the two games with two home runs and three RBIs and Corriss 4-7 with five runs scored. The losses drop Marist to 25-16 overall and 8-2 in the MAAC.

Game 1 A two-run home run by Klemmer in the first inning started the game's scoring. Over the next three innings, the Red Foxes' offense went silent and the team fell behind as Manhattan had seven runs cross home. Down 7-2 in the top of the fifth, Marist responded by posting a three spot on the scoreboard. The rally started with Corriss hitting her third single in as many at bats. Junior Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket, R.I.) quickly cleared Corriss off the base paths with a deep home run to left field. After an out was recorded, Klemmer was up to bat again and much like her first plate appearance of the game, she went deep. With those two home runs, Marist closed the deficit to 7-5. Sophomore pitcher Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Georgia) retired the Jasper side in order in the bottom of the fifth and the Marist offense went back to work.

In the sixth, two two-out walks to Corriss and Lamoureux brought junior Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) to the plate. With a runner in scoring position, she hit a sharp line drive to the Manhattan shortstop, who bobbled the ball and allowed Corriss to cross for Marist's sixth run of the game. Manhattan responded with a two-run home run to make the score 9-6, which is where the game eventually ended.

Game 2 In similar fashion to game one, the Red Foxes manufactured a run in the top of the first inning. After reaching on a catcher's interference, Corriss made her way around the bases and eventually scored on a sacrifice flyout by freshman Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.). The Jaspers responded in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own. Looking to retake the lead, it was the bottom of the lineup's turn to get offensive. Sophomore Danielle Koltz (Chenango Bridge, N.Y.) led off by drawing a walk. With sophomore Sarah Carmody (Camarillo, Calif.) at bat, Koltz got herself into scoring position as she stole second. She quickly scored as Carmody drove a long fly ball that hit the bottom of the outfield wall.

Each team went scoreless over their next two ups, until Manhattan plated three in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead at 4-2. In true back and forth form, Marist was up to the task of responding back in the fifth inning. Starting with the leadoff batter Corriss, Marist sent all nine batters to the plate. Six hitters recorded hits and DiVirgilio, Zahka (2) and Koltz all picked RBIs to give the team a 6-4 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Jaspers' offense sent all nine of their batters to the plate and scored five runs on five hits to go ahead by the final score of 9-6.

The Red Foxes will next be in action on Wednesday April 20 as they host La Salle in a non-conference twinbill that is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
