Marist Softball Sweeps Rider In Doubleheader

April 9, 2011

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Behind the superb pitching of freshman Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) and sophomore Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.), the Marist softball team allowed just one run in two games against Rider, smothering its MAAC foe by the score of 3-1 in the first game, and 9-0 in the second. The wins improved Marist to 19-14 overall and 4-0 in the MAAC.

Offensively, the Red Foxes were sparked by junior Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y), who compiled six RBI and three hits between the two games. Corriss and freshmen Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J), Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) and Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) all recorded hits in both games.

Game 1

An RBI double from Rider's Lucy Higgins led off the afternoon's scoring in the fourth inning of game one. In the bottom of the inning, Zahka responded with a solo homerun to knot the score at one. Corriss singled to lead off the fifth, and two batters later, scored on a single by Klemmer, giving Marist its first lead of the afternoon. The Red Foxes grabbed an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice-fly by Corriss, which scored Birnbaum. With two runners on base and no one out in the bottom of the seventh, Lewis retired the final three batters to seal the victory, improving her record to 8-5.

Game 2

A five-run second inning assured that the second contest would not be nearly as close. After Klemmer scored on an illegal pitch, a triple hit down the right field line by Corriss scored junior Nicole Van Loan (Kingston, N.Y), who was pinch running for sophomore Sarah Carmody (Camarillo, Calif.). Corriss then scored on sacrifice fly by Lamoureux. A bases-loaded walk of Birnbaum scored Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) to round out the scoring. Osterhaus, who gave up just three hits, also improved to 8-5.

The Red Foxes will host another MAAC doubleheader tomorrow afternoon against Iona. First pitch of game one is slated for 12 p.m.
