POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Softball team saw the winningest season in program history come to an end on Friday afternoon at Gartland Park as the fell twice in the MAAC Championship double-elimination format. They finish their season with a 33-22 record that ties the 2006 and 1995 teams for the most wins in Marist history. They were defeated by Fairfield in their first game of the day 3-2 and by Iona 9-0 in their second contest.
In game one the Red Foxes dropped a tightly contested contest to the Fairfield Stags 3-2. The Red Foxes were led by junior Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) who recorded three hits and an RBI in the game. Sophomore Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) pitched a complete game in defeat. The Stags took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by Lauren Liseth.
The Red Foxes rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the third. After freshman Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) led off the inning with a walk, junior Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) laid down a bunt and reached base safely via a fielder's choice, advancing Birnbaum to second. Two batters later, Corriss doubled down the right field line to score Marist's first run. Sophomore Sarah Carmody (Camarillo, Calif.) then lifted a sacrifice fly to tie the score at two.
Fairfield answered right back in the top of the fourth to re-take the lead 3-2 on a single to center by Laura Carta.
The Red Foxes had their best chance in the fifth when two singles in the inning put a runner on third with two outs, but Marist was unable to push across the tying run.
Osterhaus pitched a complete game, giving up just three runs and striking out four.
In game two, the Red Foxes faced off with an Iona squad, who had built up momentum from their exciting 4-3 victory over Manhattan just 30 minutes earlier. Both teams started out slowly as pitchers Emily Osterhaus and Sarah Jackson controlled the opposing offenses.
Iona broke through with five runs in the third inning as Katie Jansson doubled to center with a 2-2 count and two outs on the scoreboard. Iona's catcher Melanie Gettins extended the lead with a three-run home run. The Gaels pushed another run across in the fifth to make the lead 6-0.
