GREENSBORO,
N.C. - The Red Foxes lost a pair of game on the second day of the
North Carolina A&T Tournament. Senior Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) led
the Red Fox offense with a 2 for 3 showing in the team's opening 6-3 loss to Utah
Valley University and a 3-RBI double in their 12-7 afternoon setback to
Youngstown State.
UTAH
VALLEY 6 - MARIST 3: The Red Foxes' Saturday began with promise as they connected on
three consecutive hits with two outs to score two runs in the bottom of the
second inning. Sophomore Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) started the rally with a
two-out double to left center. She came around to score in the next at-bat as
sophomore Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) drove her in with a triple to the
fence. Junior Sarah Carmody (Camarillo, Calif.) was the third Red Fox to rope a
hit off of Utah Valley pitching in the inning, as she drove in Birnbaum.
Marist's 2-0 lead was quickly responded to by the Wolverines in
the top of the third with two runs of their own.
The top of Marist's batting order went to work in the bottom of
the third, as the top five batters combined for two hits and the go-ahead third
run. After reaching on a fielder's choice, sophomore Alyssa Zahka (Lexington,
Mass.) came around to score via a double by junior Danielle Koltz (Chenango
Bridge, N.Y.)
Following a two-run top of the fifth by Utah Valley, Marist nearly
tied it up at four-all in the bottom of the frame as DiVirgilio looked to drive
in Koltz with a double to right field. Unfortunately for the Red Foxes, the
Wolverines executed a strong relay from right field to second base and finally
to home plate to cut down Koltz.
UVU added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning to
make the final score 6-3.
YOUNGSTOWN
STATE 12 - MARIST 7: In the second game of the day, Marist met up with the Penguins of
Youngstown State in a 3:15 p.m. matchup.

an early 10-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning; four runs in the third and
sixth in the fourth.

explosive inning of their own in the bottom of the fifth. In the frame, Marist
sent 12 batters to the plate and scored a half dozen runs. Pinch-hitter Nicole
Van Loan (Kingston, N.Y.) was the first of three Red Fox hitters to reach
safely via hits to start the inning. Van Loan and freshman Taylor Kuzma
(Freehold, N.J.) came around to tally Marist's first two runs on a two-RBI
triple down the right field line by senior Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.).
DiVirgilio was the next Red Fox to notch multiple RBIs as she
drove in Corriss, Zahka and Koltz with a double to left center. The sixth RBI
of the inning was credited to Kuzma, who drew a bases loaded walk.
With the score 10-6 in Youngstown State's favor, the teams exchanged
runs in the seventh inning; YSU scored two, while Marist scored one via a
Birnbaum sac fly.
After seven full innings of action, the game went final at 12-7.
Marist (1-5) will complete their quartet of games at the North
Carolina A&T Tournament with a mid-day meeting versus the host Aggies on
Sunday.
