GREENSBORO,
N.C. - The Red Foxes capped off a weekend of action at the North
Carolina A&T Tournament with a 6-3 win over the host Aggies. Junior
Danielle Koltz (Chenango Bridge, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with a sixth inning
grand slam.
North Carolina A&T opened the scoring with a three hit, one
run bottom of the first inning. Making her first career start, freshman pitcher
Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) settled down after that initial inning and let
her offense take control from there on out.
Marist took the lead in the third inning as it put up two unearned
runs on the scoreboard. With the first two batters retired, Koltz came to bat
and hit a come-backer to pitcher, who bobbled the ball, allowing Koltz to reach
via error. Following a passed ball, Marist's clean-up hitter, senior Nicole
DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.), tied the game up with a single up the middle. DiVirgilio
came around to score as the next batter senior Megan Lamoureux (Woonsocket,
R.I.) hit a ball towards the Aggie second baseman, who misplayed it.
Up 2-1, the Red Foxes put some distance between them and the host
Aggies in the top of the sixth inning. Singles by junior Sarah Carmody
(Camarillo, Calif.), sophomore Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) and senior
Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) loaded the bases for Marist before Koltz quickly
unloaded them with a long drive out over the center field wall. This was the
junior's second home run of the young season and the team's first grand slam.
After five scoreless innings with just two hits, North Carolina
A&T finally was able to get to Lalli one last time. The Aggies scratched
out two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before finally succumbing to
the Red Foxes by a count of 6-3.
Lalli earned her first career victory with a final pitching line
of seven innings pitched, eight hits allowed, three earned runs and six
strikeouts.
Both Corriss and Carmody paced the offense with two hits, though Koltz'
one hit in the sixth inning left the largest impression on the scoreboard.
The Red Foxes (2-5) will be back in action next weekend at a
tournament at George Mason. Beginning on Friday, March 2 at 6 p.m., the Red
Foxes will play a series of four games versus George Mason, Cornell and Akron
(2).
