POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist water polo team opened the Marist Invite with a decisive 12-6 victory over Notre Dame of Ohio. Seniors Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.) and Kelly Kline (Reading, Pa.) paced the Red Foxes' offense with four and three goals, respectively.
Shelby Rinker (Lansdale, Pa.) and Mackenzie Maynes (Newcastle, Wash.) each had a three-point games on a goal and two assists. Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.), Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) and Yuriria Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) all also scored for the Red Foxes. Jaclyn Puccino (San Diego, Calif.) had an assist and made four steals on the defensive side. Elise Humphries (Anaheim, Calif.) played the entire game in goal, making six saves and adding two steals.
Desaulniers scored three of her goals in the first quarter as Marist (3-14) jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead. Rinker also scored in the opening run.
After the Falcons scored twice to close to within 4-3 early in the second quarter, the Red Foxes found the back of the net three straight times to close the half up 7-3. Jessica Hamby scored to start the streak, and Kline added her first two of the game.
Both teams each scored three times in the third quarter as Marist maintained a four-goal lead. Maynes and Desaulniers added goals in the final period to provide the final margin.
The Marist Invite continues Saturday and Sunday with games starting at 8 a.m. The Red Foxes play twice on Saturday, versus Brown at 2:15 p.m. and Gannon at 6 p.m. Marist will celebrate Senior Day prior to the game against Gannon. The team will celebrate their three seniors - Desaulniers, Kline and Puccino - in a pre-game ceremony.
