Men's Tennis Opens Play At Two Tournaments

FLUSHING MEADOW, N.Y./NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Marist men's tennis team kicked off the second weekend of the fall season on Friday, taking part in two separate tournaments. Four Red Foxes travelled to Yale for the Ivy Plus Tournament while the rest of the team went to Flushing Meadow, the site of the U.S. Open, for the USTA Invitational.

At the USTA Invitational, one round of doubles and two rounds of singles were played on Day One.

Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) swept a pair of matches in Draw “E”, winning in straight sets over his opponent from Fairfield 6-2, 6-2 before cruising past his adversary from Sacred Heart, 6-3, 6-2. Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) continued his undefeated play this fall, winning twice in Draw “C”, 6-2, 6-2 over his adversary from NJIT in round one and 6-1, 6-1 over one of Fairfield's top players.

In Draw “A”, Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) fell 6-3, 6-3 in the first round before bouncing back for a 6-3, 6-3 victory in a back draw match over an opponent from Boston College of the ACC.

Also in Draw “C”, Julien Hochner (Nice, France) fell 7-6 (5), 7-6 (8) in the first round, but defeated his opponent from Monmouth in the back draw 3-6, 6-4, 10-3.

Jacob Solly (Sydney, Australia) fell in a tough three-set match in the first round of Draw “F” 6-4, 3-6, 10-5, but bounced back to win easily in a back draw match, 6-0, 6-2.

Aviel Malka (Israel) won his first collegiate match, 6-1, 6-2 over his opponent from Fairfield before falling in the second round 6-4, 6-1.

Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway), playing in Draw “B”, was forced to retire against his opponent from Fairfield. Joseph Motta (Staten Island, N.Y.) fell in both his matches in Draw “D”.

In doubles, Hochner and Malka were the only Marist pairing to come out victorious, defeating a duo from St. Francis 8-6.

"It was a tough day overall, but I thought our guys battled hard and didn't make excuses,” Marist assistant coach Jason Sacher said. “We need to continue working hard and improving each day."

At the Ivy Plus Tournament, Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) advanced out of the first round after his opponent from Yale retired following Rossi taking the first set 6-2. He then fell in the second round to a player from Columbia, 6-2, 6-3.

Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) fell in the first round in Draw “C”, 6-4, 6-3, but bounced back for what was arguably the match of the day in the second round. After losing the first set 6-2 to his opponent from Dartmouth, Klassen was down 4-1 and 5-2 in the second set, but came back to force and win a tie breaker 13-11. The third set again went to a tiebreaker, with Klassen winning 7-5 and winning the match.

Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) and Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) each fell in their first round match, but came back to win tough back draw matches.

In doubles, the pairings of Klassen and Nagelstad and Reznek and Rossi both won, with Nagelstad and Reznek winning in a tiebreaker 8-7 (0).

“It was great to win six out of 10 matches at the Ivy Plus Tournament”

Play in both tournaments continue on Saturday and Sunday.
