LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Marist volleyball team charged to a comeback win at Rider to earn the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title. The Red Foxes (23-5, 15-3) will be the no. 1 seed in the MAAC Championships, which are set to begin Nov. 20 in Kissimmee, Fla. Their 23 wins set a program record for a single season.
Marist fell to the Broncs 25-22 in the first set before taking the next two 25-20 and slamming the door with a 25-12 win in the fourth and final set.
Neither side led by more than two for the first half of the opening set. A service ace from senior Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) tied the score at 10, but the Broncs went on an 8-3 tear that included four of their six service aces for the match. A kill by freshman Kelsey Ediger (Pearland, Texas) put Marist within two, but Rider got the final point on a kill from sophomore Ryan Ackermann.
It was Marist's turn for a run in the second set with the score knotted at 11. With kills from four different players, the Red Foxes earned six of the next eight points to go up 17-13. Marist piled on more points with a 4-2 run to even the match. Though the Red Foxes played from behind early in the third set, momentum quickly shifted beginning with a kill from senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) that tied the score at 14. From that point on, Marist went on a surging 9-0 run, forcing five attack errors with sophomore Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) serving. Rider scored six of the set's final eight points, but it proved to be too little, too late.
An 8-1 scoring spree that rolled between the Broncs' two timeouts ballooned the Red Foxes' fourth set lead to 13-5. A forced attack error punctuated a late 5-0 run that completed an insurmountable 24-10 Marist lead.
Sophomore Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas) picked up a double-double, racking up 50 assists and 12 digs. Stephens finished with 15 kills, two of which scored the final set points for Marist. Junior Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) slammed a team-best 16 kills and was one of three Red Foxes to finish in double figures in that category. Four more Marist players finished with double-digit digs, including Russo with 14.
Rider sophomore Kaitlyn Griffin registered team-highs with six blocks and three services aces, while senior Jaclyn Webber posted a double-double with 16 digs and 15 kills. The Broncs (17-15, 10-8) will be the no. 5 seed in the MAAC Championships.
The Red Foxes will head into the MAAC Championships as the top seed. Following a first round bye, they will play their first match in the quarterfianls at 5 p.m. Nov. 20 against the winner of the match between no. 8 Iona and no. 9 Saint Peter's. The Gaels and Peacocks will square off at 11 a.m. Nov. 20. The tournament will take place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports HP Field House from Nov. 20-22 in Kissimmee, Fla.
