MACON, Ga. – The Marist softball team claimed its first win of the 2014 season, defeating NC Central 3-1 at the Mercer Bear Classic.

Game One

The Red Foxes clinched a come-from-behind victory with a walk-off two-run homer from junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.). NC Central posted its only run in the third inning, before Marist tallied three in the seventh. Freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.) singled to right field, and advanced to third from the throw as senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.) reached first from a bunt. Korak went on to score on a passed ball to tie the game. Kuzma nailed the game-winning homerun to seal the Red Foxes' first victory.

Junior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) claimed the win, allowing six hits and one earned run, posting seven strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Birnbaum led the Red Foxes with three hits, while Kuzma tallied two RBI's and senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) had seven putouts.

Marist compiled eight hits from 25 at bats, leaving six runners on base. The Red Foxes also tallied six assists in their 21 putouts.

Game Two

The Red Foxes fell 6-5 against Mercer, as the Bears clinched the victory with a walk-off homerun.

Marist jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning, as senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) scored first for the Red Foxes. Freshman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah) continued the scoring, posting three RBI's off a homerun to left center.

Mercer went on to come within one of Marist in the sixth inning, compiling three runs. The Red Foxes answered back in the seventh with a run from Korak. Mercer went on to score three more at the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

Junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) took the loss, only allowing three earned runs and notching two strikeouts. Freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) led with three hits, while senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) posted three putouts and sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) added four assists.

Marist will conclude the tournament tomorrow morning in a consolation game against NC Central at 12 p.m.
