DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Marist softball team kicked off their 10-game stint in Florida for Spring Break today. The Red Foxes split the day against Bethune Cookman, claiming the first game in a 7-3 victory and falling to Wildcats 8-3 in the second game.
Game One
The Red Foxes posted a four-run stint in the fourth inning on a homerun to left field from sophomore Krysten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.). Marist claimed the first lead in the game and never looked back.
In the sixth inning, the Red Foxes tallied another two runs. Junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) singled to bring in freshman Jordynn Barrera (Clinton, Utah), while sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) doubled to right field to bat in Kuzma.
The scoring continued into the seventh inning as junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.) singled to center field with freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.) claiming the final run for Marist.
Leading the Red Foxes, Barrera and Kuzma both claimed two runs each, while Kuzma notched three hits in the game. Defensively, Cheek led with 14 putouts and Lilli compiled six assists. Lalli took the win, tallying seven hits and no earned runs with three walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.
Game Two
After the Wildcats posted a two-run lead in the second inning, Marist answered back with three runs in the third. To kick off the scoring for the Red Foxes, Van Natta singled to center field to score Kuzma. Three plays later, senior Aly Klemmer (Hamilton, N.J.) homered to left field to also bat in Van Natta and herself.
The Wildcats went on to post two runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to claim the win.
Klemmer led Marist in the outing with three hits and two RBI's. Senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) notched nine putouts for the Red Foxes, while junior Jayne Oberdorf (Greensburg, Pa.) took the loss.
Marist continues their trip, as they face off against Florida A&M at 11:15 a.m. tomorrow before competing against the University of South Florida at 3:45 p.m.
