Marist Splits Final Two Matches at Air Force Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Marist volleyball team split its two matches at the end of the Air Force Invitational to move to 4-2 on the season. The Red Foxes took down Weber State in three straight sets, 25-23, 25-14, 25-20 earlier today before bowing out to Houston Baptist in four sets, 26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20.

Reigning MAAC Player of the Week junior Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) had a match-high 13 kills on her way to a .385 hitting percentage to go along with three digs. Sophomore Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas) was a dominant force in front of the net, leading the Red Foxes with nine digs, totaling 29 assists and registering a kill on four of her six attempts. Marist also got contributions from seniors Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.), who had eight kills, and Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.), who picked up seven digs.

The Wildcats hit just .038 as a team, and were led by senior McKay Tarbox's seven digs. Sophomore Ciera Borho had six digs of her own and eight kills.

Marist came back from a 20-15 deficit in the highly contested first set by scoring four straight points. Weber State threatened again, pulling ahead 23-22, but the Red Foxes pulled away with a kill from Shaw and two forced errors. Halfway through the second set, with the score at 12-9 in favor of Marist, the Red Foxes went on a tear by taking 11 of the next 13 points. Marist improved its hitting percentage by nearly .200 in the third set, vaulting from .125 to .324 to seal the win.   

Houston Baptist 3, Marist 1 - 26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20 

Zywick kept rallies alive, registering 21 of the Red Foxes' 49 digs in the losing effort. Junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) paced Marist with 14 kills alongside a .250 hitting percentage, while senior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) swatted 13 kills, got three digs, and a service ace while hitting .370. Gilbert helped Marist earn 17 points during the match.  

For Houston Baptist, sophomore Jessica Wooten had a match-high 23 kills. She also had 11 digs with a .327 hitting percentage. Sophomore Kayla Armer posted a match-high 57 assists and three services aces. Senior Haley Hoffman contributed 18 digs.

The Huskies had 35 kills over the last two sets on their way to taking their third victory of the season. 

The first three sets of the match were decided by three points or fewer, as Marist was up by four points in the first set before Houston Baptist reeled off five straight points to take a 24-23 lead they would not relinquish. Marist dug out of an early hole in the second set, taking its first lead on a Gilbert kill that made it 20-19. Houston Baptist held their own in the third set however, scoring 10 of the final 14 points. Marist fought back in the fourth set after they were down 12-3, but could not cut the deficit to more than four points.  

Marist will host Army in its 2014 home opener at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 in McCann Arena.
