Highlighting The Best Championship Teams In Program History

Every Monday throughout the summer, we'll be highlighting some of the best championship teams throughout our history, Check back here on GoRedFoxes.com weekly!

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The 2013 Marist football team gathered momentum throughout the season, and it culminated in winning a share of its first Pioneer Football League championship in its fifth season in the league.

The Red Foxes dropped their first two games heading into their final non-league match-up at Georgetown on Sept. 14. The game started on a bright note as cornerback Jack Marston intercepted a pass on the first play from scrimmage. With the score tied at nine in the waning seconds of the first half, quarterback Chuckie Looney dove inside the pylon for a touchdown to give the Red Foxes the lead. Marist went on to score 28 straight points in under 11 minutes of game time for a 43-23 triumph, the first road victory in program history against a Patriot League foe.

League play opened two weeks later at Dayton. Marist erased a 13-point first-quarter deficit for its first win over the Flyers in program history, a 31-20 triumph which included 31 consecutive points. The next week brought the first of two shutouts the Red Foxes would enjoy this season, a 37-0 blanking of Valparaiso.

Marist's lone loss over its final nine games took place at San Diego by a score of 35-33 on Oct. 12, when a penalty enabled the Toreros to kick the game-winning field with no time remaining. But the Red Foxes closed the season with a fury – five straight victories, four by more than 20 points, four games with at least 30 points, and one more shutout. A 33-7 home triumph over Mercer on Senior Day enabled the Red Foxes to clinch their first PFL crown.

The individual and team accolades for the Red Foxes were numerous:
  • Defensive end Terrence Fede set the program's single-season and career records for sacks. He led the Football Championship Subdivision in sacks per game, and was named an All-American by five separate outlets. He was named PFL Defensive Player of the Year, and finished sixth in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, presented to the FCS' top defensive player.
  • Looney set the program's single-game, single-season, and career records for touchdown passes, all of which still stand today.
  • Armani Martin caught a program-record 12 touchdown passes, a record which he still holds.
  • Head coach Jim Parady was named PFL Coach of the Year.
  • The team set single-season program records for points scored and total yards, which still stand today.
  • Defensively, the Red Foxes had their highest sack total since 1997, their highest interception count since 1999, and most shutouts since 2002.
And the best was yet to come. On May 10, 2014, Fede was selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. He was the first player in program history to be drafted, and became the first former Marist football player to play in an NFL game that September. This year, Fede is preparing for his fifth NFL season as a member of the Buffalo Bills.
