POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's soccer team takes part in NCAA First Round play on Thursday night, when the Red Foxes face Providence of the Big East Conference. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Providence is 10-4-4 overall and finished second in the Big East with 18 points (5-2-3). The Friars reached the championship match of the Big East Tournament.
The winner of Thursday's match will travel to face #14 overall seed Marshall, the defending national champion, on Sunday at 1 p.m.
- This is the first Marist's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2005.
- In their history, the Red Foxes have won four MAAC championships (2000, 2004, 2005, 2021). This is their third NCAA appearance (2004, 2005, 2021), as they lost a play-in game to IUPUI in 2000.
- Marist is 0-2 all-time in NCAA play.
- The Red Foxes lost 2-1 in overtime at UConn in 2004.
- The Red Foxes lost 3-1 at St. John's in 2005.
- Head coach Matt Viggiano is in his 15th year leading the Red Foxes.
- Viggiano won his 100th game with the Red Foxes on Oct. 13, 2021 against Rider.
- At Marist, Viggiano has been a player, assistant coach, and head coach. He was a two-year starter and captain (1997-98) with the Red Foxes. He served two stints as an assistant coach at Marist (1999, 2003-04), and was on staff for Marist's NCAA appearance in 2004.
- Over the last three seasons the team has played (2018, 2019, 2021), Marist is 19-8-3 in MAAC play.
- This season, Viggiano was named MAAC Coach of the Year for the first time as the Red Foxes won their first regular-season MAAC championship in school history.
- Is the third head coach in the program's history, succeeding Doc Goldman (1963-95) and Bob Herodes (1996-2006).
- Marist had three major award winners this year: Viggiano, Huib Achterkamp (MAAC Defensive Player of the Year), and Samuel Ilin (MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year).
- Stefan Copetti and Henrique Cruz were named First Team All-MAAC. Skylar Conway and Antek Sienkiel were named to the Second Team, and Richard Morel was an All-Rookie Team selection.
- Kyle Galloway was named MAAC Tournament MVP. Galloway had a hand in five of the six goals the Red Foxes scored over the course of the championship (three goals, two assists).
- Henrique Cruz, Bernardo Gracindo, and Demarre Mountoute were named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team.

- Marist had 12 selections to the MAAC All-Academic Team (Huib Achterkamp, Sam LaTorre, Evan Mason, Dylan McDermott, Matt Newfield, Jaiden Pean, Ronald Ray Jr., Liam Salmon, Justin Scharf, Michael Schimbeno, Brandon Scoffield, Bruno Servisi).
- Marist's non-conference schedule included quality wins on the road against Saint Joseph's and St. John's, both by 1-0 scores.
- The highest-ranked team the Red Foxes faced was New Hampshire (then #9) on Sept. 14. The Red Foxes scored first, but the Wildcats prevailed, 2-1.
- Marist won its first two MAAC matches, then dropped its next two. Since Oct. 13, the Red Foxes are 7-0-2. This stretch included a run of three straight shutouts and a defensive scoreless streak of over 391 minutes.
- Marist did not allow a goal in its first two matches of the MAAC Championship. The Red Foxes led 2-0 against Rider before the Broncs tied the match. Marist prevailed in PKs, 5-3.
