Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist softball team won both games of its Saturday doubleheader against the Saint Peter's Peahens, 5-3 and 9-1. In her third at-bat of the season, Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to create the difference in the 5-3 win.
At the plate, Ashley Corriss (Sayville, N.Y.) scored four runs and went 2-for-4 with a walk over both games. Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.) produced five RBIs with three hits in game two. Christina Lausch (Lancaster, Pa.) also swung the bat well in both games, earning four hits in six at bats with one RBI on the day.
The Red Foxes opened play on the day with a two-run first inning to give starting pitcher Emily Osterhaus (Suwanee, Ga.) the early advantage. Corriss led off the game with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, DiVirgilio brought Corriss home with a double to left. With two outs, Lausch singled through the right side to plate Malloy and put Marist up 2-0.
After a scoreless second inning, the Peahens answered with two runs of their own in the top of the third. Ariana Payan doubled to right-center to bring in Stephanie Gilronan and Jillian Picchini to tie the score at two.
The Red Foxes regained the lead in the fifth inning with Lauren Napoli (Guilderland, N.Y.) scoring on a fielder's choice; however, Saint Peter's Amanda Rice singled in Payan during the top of the sixth to tie the game at three.
The Red Foxes loaded the bases for Malloy in the bottom of the sixth and the team co-captain delivered a two-run single up the middle to reach the final score of 5-3. Malloy went 2-for-6 on the day with three RBIs and two runs scored.
In game two, the Marist offense again opened strong, striking pitcher Danielle Koltz (Chenango Bridge, N.Y.) to a 2-0 lead after one inning. During the inning, DiVirgilio singled in Corriss and Koltz earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Red Fox offensive outburst continued in the second as Marist plated three more to take a 5-0 lead. With the bases loaded, DiVirgilio plated all three Red Foxes on a double to left field. For the day, DiVirgilio went 4-for-7 with two doubles, five RBIs and one run scored.
After Saint Peter's scratched out an unearned run on a throwing error in the top of the fourth, Marist answered with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Corriss singled through the right side to lead off the inning, stole second and scored on a throwing error. DiVirgilio followed two batters later with her ninth double of the season, scoring McCallion Campbell (Port Jervis, N.Y.) from second. After DiVirgilio moved to third on a single by Lausch, Koltz earned her second RBI of the game on a groundout to second base that put the Red Foxes ahead 8-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, one run shy of enabling the NCAA mandated mercy rule that ends the game after the fifth inning if one team is down by eight or more runs, Schell stepped in to pinch hit for Sarah Carmody (Camarillo, Calif.). On the first pitch of the inning, Schell homered on a fly ball to left field and end the game with a 9-1 score after five innings. The home run was Schell's first collegiate hit in four career at-bats.
Osterhaus went the distance for the Red Foxes in game one, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks to earn her first collegiate win. Koltz pitched a complete game one-hitter to earn her second win on the season. Koltz did not allow an earned run and struck out five Peahens on the day.
The Red Foxes return to action at the Softball Park at Gartland Field on Sunday, April 25 for a doubleheader against the Manhattan Lady Jaspers.
