NEW YORK, N.Y. – A day after winning its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match of the season, the Marist men's tennis team opened up play at the Columbia Invite on Friday. The day consisted of two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
Both Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) and Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) were victorious in Draw “B”. Dube beat his opponent from Dartmouth in straight sets 7-5 (5), 6-4. Reznek had to fight back from a tough second set to defeat his adversary from Columbia, eventually winning by a 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 score.
In Draw “C” the Norwegion duo of Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) and Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) both advanced with easy wins. Nagelstad cruised past his Fordham opponent 6-2, 6-2, while Bjerke dispatched his foe from Columbia, 6-2, 6-3.
Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) and Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) both fell in Draw “A” action.
In doubles, the pairing of Dube and Bjerke cruised to an 8-3 victory in Draw “A” over a duo from Texas-Arlington. They fell, however, in the second round to a pairing from St. John's, 8-6.
Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) and Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) were also victorious in the first round, winning 8-2 over a pairing from Fordham in Draw “B”. Like their teammates in Draw “A” however, they fell in a tight second round match, dropping an 8-7 (3) decision to a duo from Texas-Arlington.
Rossi and Reznek had a bye in the first round of Draw “B” and faced off against a pairing from new MAAC opponent, Monmouth, in the second round. The Red Foxes eked out an 8-7 (4) victory to advance.
Klassen and Nagelstad fell in the first round to a pairing from Columbia, 8-5.
"Today was a great start for us in the Columbia Classic,” Marist head coach Tim Smith said. “We are starting to peak at the right time and I'm excited with how hard all the guys are working.”
Play at the Columbia Invite continues through the weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
